Rod maker: ‘These are small steps, but we are trying our best for the Earth’

Share

Top Chinese OEM rod manufacturer Weihai Hanhigh has been working on improving the environmental footprint of the company for more than 12 years.

During that time – under the watchful eye of company owner Qian Gang Wang (below) – the company has:

• Changed its heating system from coal to natural gas to reduce air pollution;

• Set up a 210 KWH solo power plant in the roof of the factory building that can generate more than 250,000KWH and save carbon emissions by 200 tonnes a year . “These are small steps for the Earth, but we are trying our best,” said Mr Wang;

• Used recycled material in its rod packaging;

• Introduced cleaning procedures during production for all gaseous emissions and waste water to ensure a cleaner environment.

Wang told Angling International: “In recent years there has been a growing awareness that it is the responsibility of everyone – especially industry leaders and those in charge of factories – to take measures protect the environment.

“When I was young the sky was blue, the water was clear and the air fresh. But together with the development of industry and the economy, everywhere within the workplace became dirtier and the weather changed.”

Wang believes that is changing thanks to restrictions imposed by the Chinese Government and a willingness of manufacturers to adopt a more responsible attitude. “Things are changing and the environment in China has improved – the blue sky, white clouds, and clean water and air are coming back. We can see everything we are doing is making a difference.”

He added that change is also been driven by his customers. “They have been asking for changes and we have responded by introducing the likes of unleaded paint and recycled materials in our products. All these measures come at a cost, but they are worth it and some – like sonar panels – can save factories up to 50% of their electricity bills.”

Wang accepts that the actions of producers may never be enough, but he added: “The most important thing is raising awareness and when you get that you pay attention to the details in your life.”
