Irish retailer looking to fill Brexit gaps with new suppliers

Share

The owner of an Irish retailer is set to make his first visit to a European fishing tackle trade show for 12 years with his target firmly set on finding new suppliers and products.

Brian Conlon, of Wild Total Outdoors, a business based in Mullingar in the centre of the Republic of Ireland, told Angling International that his hit list included replacing business his company has lost as a result of Brexit. He explained: “Since the UK’s decision the leave the EU, some companies in the region have become too complicated to do business with.

“We have had to stop stocking some brands we have worked with for a number of years and had to replace them with businesses based in the EU that can supply similar products. This includes the likes of Abramis of Poland, the owner of the Mikado brand. It has a comprehensive range of fishing tackle and fringe products that suit our business.”

Another top European supplier that has been signed up by Total Wild Outdoors is Saenger Top Tackle of Germany, owner of brands that include Anaconda, Iron Claw, Iron Trout and Uni Cat.

“Some bigger companies from the UK have registered to work in the Republic, including Pure Fishing and Leeda, but for many of the smaller businesses, it has become too problematic,” said Conlon.

Conlon added that Wild Total Outdoors is enjoying a boom in business with the retailer going from strength to strength every year. “COVID helped us a lot as it rekindled a passion for fishing and that has not diminished.

“We are spoilt by our location which is less than two hours from either Irish coasts – ensuring we sell plenty of saltwater gear – and in the middle of waters that have abundant opportunities for general coarse, fly and pike fishing.”
