A new player from outside angling is planning to make waves in the saltwater footwear market, and it already has powerful backing for its eco-friendly shoes even before its official launch.
The Strike brand is rooted in the rich heritage of Overland Shoes, based in London. With three generations of craftsmanship under its belt, Overland is renowned for delivering high-quality, innovative and stylish footwear, including ranges of shoes under licence for major fashion brands.
Lifelong angler Stephen Palmer, the owner of Overland Shoes, has now turned his attention to the angling market, driven by his passion for fishing and also by his concerns for the future of marine environments.
After years of research into eco-friendly materials that would not compromise the functionality of its shoes, the Strike brand from Overland Shoes is now ready for launch, beginning in December at ISPO Munich, the world’s biggest trade show for the sports industry.
At ISPO, Strike will unveil its first ranges of highly functional eco-friendly shoes for saltwater anglers. But it will do something else too, to instantly confirm that it means business in the angling market. Strike will also announce an official partnership with IGFA which will see a proportion of all profits from purchases of Strike shoes donated towards IGFA’s ocean science and marine conservation programmes.
Says Palmer (on right of picture, below): “Since my childhood in South Africa, I have enjoyed a passion for fishing. I have fished throughout my life and all over the world, so I understand that a healthy ocean is how we ensure that future generations can share in these same passions.
“I have made particularly strong friendships with the local fishing community in Sardinia, and that is where the idea of Strike was conceived. It’s a brand that connects my passion for fishing, my expertise as a shoemaker and the ambition we should all share for a healthier ocean. The partnership with IGFA demonstrates our commitment to healthier oceans.”
Strike’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its donations to IGFA. Strike shoes incorporate SEAQUAL® YARN, a material created from upcycled marine plastic, and SolumTM bio-tread, made from recycled plant by-products, which breaks down to release nutrients back into marine and terrestrial environments, supporting ecosystems wherever anglers go.
The brand’s commitment to sustainability is not just a marketing ploy, says Palmer, it is a core principle that defines every product. Even the packaging – featuring a sailfish illustration by marine artist Dennis Friel – is made from recycled paper.
This commitment to sustainability does nothing to hamper performance, however. Palmer says that his own experiences fishing from boats have motivated him to ensure the shoes he makes fully integrate functionality and stylish design. Strike shoes are engineered for the unique demands of saltwater anglers, delivering what every angler craves: stability, comfort and protection. They achieve it in three ways in particular:
Strike isn’t just about meeting expectations, it’s about redefining them, says Palmer.
As Strike prepares to make its mark at ISPO next month, the brand is actively seeking distributors in the saltwater market who are passionate about blending profit with purpose. Strike offers a partnership grounded in:
At ISPO, Strike will officially launch five exciting variations of its Ocean Made Footwear, including wellingtons, deck shoes, deck sneakers and flip flops. It is a range that ‘reflects the brand’s commitment to providing high-performance footwear tailored for the diverse needs of saltwater anglers,’ says Palmer.
But what gives Strike confidence in its venture into the angling market? The answer is simple, says Palmer. “There is a critical need for high-performance footwear designed specifically for anglers. The oceans demand footwear that respects and supports their ecosystems, and consumers are increasingly seeking products that align with their values. With a powerful combination of functionality, sustainability and style, Strike is poised for success.
“Our message to new business partners is this: join us in making a meaningful impact in the saltwater angling community. Together, we can protect our oceans while enjoying the thrill of fishing. Let’s create a future where every step taken on the water contributes to a healthier planet. Welcome to Strike – where performance meets purpose.”
