KastKing takes next big step in Europe with Spanish deal

Share

KastKing has appointed Spanish distributor Calico as its exclusive partner for Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra, a move the US tackle brand says will accelerate its expansion plans across southern Europe.

The agreement was formalised following discussions at EFTTEX and builds on a relationship between the companies that stretches back almost two decades.

KastKing’s Business Strategist, Rex Nelson (main image, centre), told Angling International that he has worked with Calico from previous industry roles, providing a level of confidence that the Barcelona-based distributor could become a long-term strategic partner.

“I’ve personally worked with Calico for almost 20 years dating back to my TUF Line days,” said Nelson. “Eric Knickerbocker (above right) – KastKing Business Director – also worked with Calico for around five years. Having that long history with Calico gave us the knowledge that they would be a fantastic partner.

“Operating from its headquarters and warehouse facilities in Barcelona, the company is well positioned to service retailers across the Iberian Peninsula and surrounding territories. For KastKing, the partnership delivers immediate access to an established sales network with strong penetration in saltwater fishing markets.

“Calico has an extensive sales force covering Spain, Portugal and the surrounding islands. With a strong presence in saltwater markets, it has the ability to hit the ground running with our top-tier saltwater spinning reels.

“The relationship also offers growth opportunities for both businesses. While Calico has traditionally been strongest in saltwater, it has ambitions to expand further into freshwater fishing. KastKing believes its portfolio can help make that happen.

“With KastKing’s strong presence in freshwater reels, rods, line and accessories, Calico can expand its sales efforts into additional markets and become an even more complete service provider to its customer base,” added Nelson.

The distributor’s in-house marketing capabilities were also cited as a key advantage. Calico can localise catalogues and promotional materials for individual markets, enabling faster product launches and stronger retailer support.

Initially, Calico will focus on KastKing’s core, high-volume product categories but will ultimately offer the company’s full freshwater and saltwater range, including reels, rods, lines, tools and accessories.

The announcement comes after what KastKing described as another successful appearance at EFTTEX, where the brand showcased its latest innovations and secured two new product awards.

“Our European plans are certainly moving more slowly than expected, but much of that is due to the calculated approach we are taking to selecting the right partners,” explained Nelson. “We anticipate that by the end of 2027 we will have a complete distribution network for KastKing product lines throughout Europe.”

The company has already confirmed it will return to EFTTEX in Prague in 2027. It will also exhibit again at ANGELWELT Berlin alongside its German distributor, Advanced Fishing, following what it described as an overwhelmingly successful event last year.

Why the deal makes sense for Calico

Calico has described its partnership with KastKing as an important strategic step for the company.

Montserrat Calico (pictured below centre with KastKing CEO Tate Cui and Calico Export Manager Sergi Hernandez) told Angling International: “KastKing brings a dynamic and innovative product range that allows us to strengthen our position in key market while offering our customers access to one of the fastest-growing brands in the international fishing tackle industry.

“Most importantly, it enables us to provide anglers with high-performance products that combine innovation, reliability and value.”

Calico added that one of the strengths of the partnership is the direct exchange of market knowledge. “We will provide feedback from retailers, guides and anglers across our markets, helping KastKing better understand European fishing techniques and consumer preferences. This collaboration may contribute to future product developments and adaptations specifically suited to European anglers.”

KastKing’s official launch into Calico markets is scheduled for the end of September. “We are currently finalising the product assortment and preparing a comprehensive market introduction strategy, including dealer presentations, digital marketing campaigns, product testing, media collaborations and direct engagement with the fishing community. Our objective is to build strong brand awareness from day one and establish KastKing as a reference brand within its categories.”

Calico hailed EFTTEX as ‘extremely positive’. “It was an excellent opportunity to meet existing customers, establish new contacts and discuss current market trends with industry professionals from across Europe. Having the event in Barcelona made it especially meaningful for us, allowing many partners to visit us in our home market. The feedback received throughout the show was highly encouraging.

“EFTTEX remains one of the most important events for the European fishing tackle industry and an ideal platform to showcase new products and strengthen relationships throughout the market. We have already secured our stand for 2027 in Prague.”
