AKIOS grows presence in niche multiplier reel segment

AKIOS multiplier reels were introduced to the UK market in 2010 by Simon Bradbury following his departure from Abu Garcia / Pure Fishing in 2009.
Leveraging direct design and development experience gained from legacy high-performance models such as the Abu Garcia Mag Elite, Abu Garcia Sports Mag and Abu Garcia Rocket series, the AKIOS platform was engineered to deliver optimised casting dynamics and mechanical robustness specifically for UK shore and beach casting applications.
AKIOS owner Bradbury told Angling International: “AKIOS has definitely grown its presence by focusing on solid build quality, corrosion resistance and features that appeal to shore and surf anglers – like strong drag systems and casting performance. That positions them well in a niche where reliability matters more than brand prestige alone.
“However, the idea that their rise is mainly due to Abu Garcia and Daiwa ‘de-selecting’ multipliers in the UK and European market is only part of the story.” A few things are happening at once, explains Bradbury:
- Market shift: Many mainstream brands – including Abu Garcia and Daiwa – have leaned more into fixed spool reels for the European market because that’s where broader demand is;
- Specialisation gap: That leaves a gap in the multiplier segment – especially for surfcasting – which smaller or more focused brands like AKIOS can fill;
- Price-to-performance: AKIOS has been competitive by offering high-spec reels at a price-point that undercuts some legacy brands;
- Brand positioning: AKIOS has marketed directly to UK shore anglers, which helps build loyalty in a specific community rather than chasing global volume.
The initial AKIOS range comprised seven multiplier reels built around rigid frame architectures and high-strength drivetrain assemblies. Core engineering features included precision-machined brass main and pinion gears with a later addition of stainless steel mains and pinions on specific models to maximise torque transmission efficiency and wear resistance under high load. Structural integrity was reinforced using chrome-plated brass sideplates, providing both corrosion resistance and dimensional stability.
Bradbury added: “A key performance differentiator was the implementation of proprietary magnetic braking systems, designed to deliver fine, incremental spool deceleration control during high-velocity casting. These systems allowed for tunable braking profiles, reducing overrun (backlash) while maintaining optimal spool acceleration and line lay consistency. Spool assemblies were balanced for high rotational stability, contributing to improved casting distance and reduced vibration.”

The platform evolved with the introduction of one-piece CNC-machined cage constructions, significantly increasing torsional rigidity and alignment precision between spool, bearings and drivetrain components. This advancement culminated in models such as the class-leading AKIOS 656 SCM Shuttle (above), which integrated shuttle casting mechanics with enhanced spool control systems.
Subsequent model expansions incorporated incremental refinements in bearing tolerances, braking adjustability and ergonomic control interfaces, resulting in a comprehensive multiplier reel line-up engineered for durability, repeatable casting performance and adaptability across varied shore fishing conditions.

The AKIOS Nitron F-16 is the latest high-performance beachcasting reel, designed for long-distance casting and strong fish retrieval. Key features include:
‘Super controlled’ magnetic braking system
- Magnetic brakes slow the spool during a cast
- Prevents backlash
- ‘Super controlled’ means it’s finely adjustable – good for both beginners and experienced casters
- Helps you cast further with fewer tangles
One-piece CNC aluminium cage
- CNC-machined from a solid block of aluminium;
- Stronger and more precise than multi-part frames
- Keeps everything aligned under pressure – important when fighting fish
Low tolerance spool to cage
- Very tight spacing between spool and frame
- Reduces wobble and friction
- Improves casting efficiency and smoothness
Drop-down gearbox
- The gears sit slightly lower than the spool
- Helps balance the reel and improve cranking power
- Often makes retrieves feel smoother and more controlled
Super-sized brass main and bronze pinion gears
- Brass and bronze gears mean durable and corrosion-resistant
- Larger gears, more torque
- Better power when reeling in heavy fish or rigs
Fast retrieve
- High gear ratio – brings line in quickly
- Useful for: long-distance casting set-ups; quick resetting after a cast;
What it’s best for
- Long-distance beach casting
- Surf fishing with heavier leads
- Anglers who want both distance and power
Stand-out advantages
- Distance casting control (mag brakes + precision build)
- Strength (big brass gears and rigid frame)
- Speed (fast retrieve)
Bradbury added: “The angler is getting a reel that can cast distance, stay controlled and still handle powerful fish – which is not always easy to balance.” Distributor enquiries are welcomed as AKIOS continues its expansion across European markets.
