In pictures: Insta360 targets angling market with 360° storytelling strategy

Insta360 – a sponsor of Fishing TV’s ‘Return of the Giants’ – is stepping up its focus on angling, positioning its 360° cameras and hands-free capture technology as tools designed for one of fishing’s biggest content challenges: unpredictable action.

Founded in 2015 by JK Liu and university friends, Insta360 grew from a simple idea – capturing the whole experience rather than only what a camera is pointed at. Its ‘shoot first, frame later’ approach allows users to record in 360° and select the best angle afterwards. These pictures show exactly how anglers can catch those special moments on any fishing trip and were taken during filming by Fishing TV for its ‘Return of the Giants’ documentary – the story of bluefin tuna making a comeback in North Atlantic waters.

“This capability has clear relevance for fishing, where the decisive moment can happen anywhere: a fish breaking behind the boat, a rod bending unexpectedly or an angler’s reaction unfolding outside a conventional frame,” says Insta360. “With a conventional camera, you have to choose the angle before the action happens. In fishing, you do not get a second take.”

Insta360’s X5 is central to that proposition, combining 8K 360° recording, stabilisation, waterproofing and replaceable lenses for demanding marine environments. One recording can be reframed into multiple outputs, including an angler’s reaction, the fish, a wide boat shot or social-first vertical clips.

At the other end of the range, the compact GO Ultra is aimed at hands-free point-of-view filming, enabling anglers to record their experience without interrupting the activity.

Angling remains an emerging strategic category for Insta360, although its cameras have already been adopted organically by users in outdoor, watersports, travel and action-sports communities. The company is now taking a more deliberate approach, working with anglers, filmmakers, charter operators and fishing media to identify where its technology delivers practical value.

The UK and Northern Europe are early areas of interest, underlined by Insta360’s involvement with the bluefin tuna series. The company sees the project as more than a conventional sponsorship: an opportunity to show how its products perform when a crew cannot control the action.

“Bluefin fishing provides an extreme test case, with fast-moving boats, large fish and multiple people working simultaneously. Insta360’s objective is to capture perspectives that would otherwise be difficult to obtain – and demonstrate how a single recording can create multiple pieces of content for creators, media and fishing businesses,” says the company.

Insta360 is initially targeting boat and kayak fishing, destination and adventure angling and creator-led fishing. These sectors align closely with hands-free filming, mounting flexibility and the growing role of social video in how anglers discover equipment, destinations and techniques.

Beyond Europe, Insta360 identifies North America, Australia and New Zealand as attractive long-term markets. Its stated aim, however, is not simply to place products in major fishing markets, but to work with credible partners and communities where its technology solves a genuine filming problem.
