US launch for BKK’s Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin

Share

International hook brand BKK has launched its Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin in the US as part of its H2 product line-up.

The purpose-built quad-hook rig is designed around one of the most practical challenges of urchin bait fishing: keeping the bait securely centred while maintaining consistent hook exposure. BKK says: “Rather than relying on conventional rigging methods that can damage the bait body or allow the bait to shift during casting and active fishing, the Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin uses an integrated dual-wire locking pin to secure the bait directly through its centre. The result is a rig designed around three key considerations:secure bait retention, balanced bait presentation and reliable hook exposure.”

Locking system built around the bait’s axis

At the core of the Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin is its integrated dual-wire locking pin, positioned directly beneath the hook’s axis. The dual-wire mechanism passes through the centre of the urchin bait, allowing anglers to bend and secure the wire manually. By aligning the locking mechanism with the physical axis of the bait, the system positions the bait symmetrically at the centre of the quad hook. This axial fixation is designed to reduce bait movement during long-distance casts, aggressive rod movements and the sudden shakes of a fish during a fight. The locking pin is also replaceable, allowing anglers to replace the wire when necessary and extend the life of the hook.

360-degree hook configuration

With the bait fixed through its centre, the four hook points are positioned evenly around the 360-degree perimeter of the urchin bait. This symmetrical configuration is designed around the geometry of urchin-style baits, avoiding the uneven weight distribution that can occur with traditional offset rigging. More importantly, the four-point arrangement keeps multiple hook points distributed around the bait, creating potential hook contact from different strike angles. The centred rigging also helps maintain a balanced set-up underwater. With the weight distributed symmetrically around the bait, the urchin can maintain a more natural falling action during the drop. In this way, the bait-locking system and quad-hook framework are not separate features. They work together: the central fixation establishes the bait position, while the four-point configuration takes advantage of that position.

Designed to protect the bait and keeping it secure

Traditional rigging can create a trade-off between securing the bait and preserving its body. Repeated penetration or uneven attachment can damage soft bait, while insufficient fixation can cause bait loss during casting or active rod movements. The Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin approaches this problem by feeding the dual wire directly through the centre of the bait and then securing it manually. This provides a straightforward rigging process while helping minimise damage to the bait body and keeping it firmly attached during active use. The design is particularly focused on maintaining bait stability through the moments when conventional rigs can be most vulnerable – from hard casts and aggressive rod movements to the sudden movements of a fish during the fight.

Managing rotation with integral heavy-duty swivel

Another key element sits above the quad-hook framework: the integrated heavy-duty swivel eye. Urchin baits can create significant water resistance as they move through the water. That resistance can generate rotational torque within the rig, contributing to line twist and entanglement with conventional setups. The integrated swivel provides a 360-degree rotation mechanism that allows the connection to rotate more freely as the bait moves. By managing the rotational forces generated by the bait, the design is intended to significantly reduce line twist and unwanted tangling, particularly when working bulky, high-drag urchin baits. The swivel also allows the rig to rotate more freely during a fish fight, helping manage the forces generated as a fish changes direction or shakes its head.

Built for strength without overcomplicating the rig

The Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin is built with Hyperlatch 1x-Strong Hyper Carbon Steel (HCS) wire, designed to maintain structural rigidity while keeping a relatively thin hook profile. The material provides the strength required for demanding applications, with BKK reporting that its Hyper Carbon Steel is 25% stronger and 30% harder than standard hook materials. The hook is finished with a Super Slide coating and a low-friction surface treatment designed to reduce sliding resistance during hooksets. Together, the HCS wire and Super Slide coating support the overall performance of the rig – from maintaining structural rigidity to helping the hook points penetrate efficiently when a fish strikes.

Complete rigging system for urchin baits

The Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin brings its key design elements together around a single objective: keeping the bait centred, balanced and securely connected to the hook. The integrated dual-wire locking pin provides axial fixation and helps reduce bait damage and bait loss. The quad-hook framework distributes four hook points evenly around the bait’s 360-degree perimeter, supporting hook exposure from multiple angles, while the symmetrical configuration helps maintain balance and a more natural falling action.

The integrated heavy-duty swivel manages rotation and helps reduce line twist and entanglement caused by bulky urchin baits and the Hyperlatch 1x-Strong HCS wire with Super Slide coating provides the structural rigidity and low-friction performance required when the strike comes. Rather than simply adding another four-point hook to the market, BKK has built the Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin around a specific rigging logic: fix the bait through its centre to maintain a balanced 360-degree hook configuration and allow the entire rig to move more freely through the water.

BKK’s H2 US market launch

The Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin is now part of BKK’s H2 US product line-up, bringing a purpose-built rigging solution to anglers using urchin baits. Designed specifically for urchin bait applications, the new rig combines axial bait fixation, symmetrical hook positioning, balanced falling action, rotation management and BKK’s hook materials and coating technologies in one integrated system. The Hyperlatch Quad-Urchin is now available through authorised BKK retailers and online.
