Changes in the way anglers live and fish has seen travel fishing rods move from being a niche requirement to a mainstream consideration.
In recent years, more people have been combining fishing with travel, triggering an increase in the development of custom-made tackle to cater for a growing trend. As its popularity grows, so has the technical attributes of the items that are now available to anglers.
Shimano was quick to identify the potential of a new market with the launch of the Shimano Travel Concept (STC) several years ago – a move that has seen it evolve into a standalone portfolio in its own right.

Tim Bouwens, Shimano Europe Marketing Team Manager – Fishing, told Angling International: “STC has grown into a strategically important segment which has significant potential because of the multiple disciplines it cuts across. Travel rods are no longer a secondary option. For many anglers they are becoming a primary choice – meaning the ceiling for this category is much higher than it was even five years ago.”
STC does not compromise on the quality which has made Shimano an award-winning manufacturer of world renowned rods. “What is important is that STC is not positioned as a secondary range – it is engineered with the same intent as any of our core rod families,” explained Bouwens.
“The challenge is more complex because designing a multi-piece rod that behaves like a high-performance blank requires tighter tolerances and more considered construction. The core requirement is simple – no compromise on performance. Anglers expect a travel rod to deliver the same casting accuracy, sensitivity and control as a conventional rod.
“The direction is clear – travel rods should not feel like travel rods. They should simply feel like good rods that happen to pack down smaller.”
Shimano STC XR Range
There are four models in the premium line-up, each available in a selection of lengths and actions. Built on high modulus full carbon blanks with Nanosheet, HPC technology and added Diaflash, they all feature Fuji guides and reel seats and have a maximum travel length of just 65cm.

STC XR Stream Spinning
For anglers seeking a premium spinning rod tailored specifically for trout fishing in rivers and streams, along with the convenience of easy transportation, the range is the ultimate choice. Offering a variety of models to suit different fishing styles, from finesse techniques in shallow mountain streams to tackling larger, powerful rivers with heavier lures, this range has it all, says Shimano.
STC XR Monster
A true powerhouse. Ideal for targeting monster fish in both fresh and saltwater environments, these rods are the ultimate choice for anglers seeking versatility, power and performance. Whether you’re a casual angler targeting big fish at home or an avid traveller pursuing the world’s largest fish, these rods are perfect companions. With the ability to cast heavy lures and handle various bait fishing techniques with ease, they offer exceptional adaptability.

STC XR Blue Boat
Saltwater boat rod used with lures for cod, pollack and halibut. Moderate, fast action stick that is light for prolonged use. Also serves as excellent answer for tropical waters targeting pelagic species.
STC XR Blue Inshore
Stand-out choice for barracuda, bluefish or seabass, it offers exceptional across the board performance.
STC AX Range
Three spinning models available in a selection of lengths and actions. Built on full carbon blanks with Nanosheet, they all feature Hardlite guides, high quality reel seats mounted on cork handles and have a maximum travel length of just 65cm.
STC AX Spinning
Compact, top notch spinning model, these four-piece and five-piece rods deliver ‘impeccable’ performance. With seven options available, there is a rod for every preference whether you enjoy lightweight lure fishing or tackling big pike and inshore saltwater fish with large crankbaits and glide baits.
STC AX Spinning Multi
Rods that stand out in the crowd. Featuring adjustable lengths, these strong, lightweight models allow you to adapt to fishing conditions seamlessly thanks to the 30cm extension that can be added, eliminating the need to retackle. When angling near features or structures – or when precision casting is crucial – the shorter length proves invaluable.
STC AX Spinning Mini Tele
If you are looking for unparalleled compactness in a spinning rod, look no further. Meticulously designed series boasts remarkably short lengths, fitting snugly into any backpack. Despite their abbreviated transport size, once extended, the moderate-fast action proves itself a formidable contender with a strong, lightweight responsive action.
