Shimano’s formidable stable of fishing lines is epitomised by the Kairiki 8+ and Technium which represent two pillars of the Japanese brand’s line philosophy.
Tim Bouwens, Shimano Europe Marketing Team Manager – Fishing, told Angling International: “Both lines are performance-driven rather than trend-driven and address very real angling demands, from sensitivity and precision to reliability and control – and they do so in ways that are measurable and repeatable on the water.
“The Kairiki 8+ shows where Shimano is today in braided line technology, pushing roundness, durability and handling further than previous generations, while Technium represents something equally important – long-term mastery of monofilament where subtle gains in stretch, abrasion resistance and manageability make a real difference over many seasons.”

Despite its reputation as a global powerhouse in the development of award-winning, Japanese-technology-inspired fishing rods and reels, fishing line is essential to Shimano’s system approach, says Bouwens. “The line is the direct connection between the angler and the fish and its performance defines how rods and reels actually behave on the water.
“From a brand perspective, our line portfolio supports everything we create, whether it is sensitivity in a JDM rod or control in a high-gear ratio reel. Because of that, our line development is treated with the same seriousness as reel engineering. It is not an accessory category – it is core to delivering the Shimano experience as a complete system.
“Line is a growing and increasingly strategic part of the business. Anglers are more informed, more technique-focused and more willing to invest in specialist lines that match their fishing style. We see especially strong growth in premium braided lines and advanced monofilaments that offer measurable performance brand benefits over standard products.
“Kairiki 8+ reflects this demand for high‑precision braid, while Technium continues to grow with anglers who want control and confidence without moving fully into braid. That balanced growth is exactly what we aim for in the line category.”

Bouwens added that two things levitate Shimano lines from the competition – engineering discipline and long-term consistency. “We develop our own braiding methods, tension control processes and multi-layer constructions instead of relying on generic formulations. That allows us to control roundness, stetch, abrasion resistance and coating durability to a very tight tolerance.
“Equally important is that we do not chase trends. Lines like Technium stay in the range because they work, and lines like Kairiki 8+ evolve because real‑world use demands improvement. That combination of innovation where it matters and consistency where it counts is what separates Shimano lines from many competitors.”
