A store manager at the UK’s leading fishing tackle retailer shared centre-stage with the Prince of Wales in a national radio debate to discuss a growing men’s mental health issue.

Nathan Riddell (above, second from left), an employee at the Angling Direct outlet in Washington, Tyne and Wear, England, represented the James’ Place Charity, which gives help to suicidal men, joining Prince Willliam, singer Professor Green (Stephen Manderson) and rapper and broadcaster, Guvna B on the Radio One broadcast.
On the show hosted by one of the country’s top DJs, Greg James, Riddell contributed to the conversation to encourage men to start being more honest and open with themselves about their mental health.
“Angling Direct was great in supporting me by allowing me to take time out from the business to talk about this subject. I have been very vocal about my own mental health struggles over the past five or six years and have used my life experiences and passion for mental health advocacy to support others in the community.
“To be able to able to do it on a platform with guests who have such a reach and influence not only across the UK but globally was phenomenal.
“It was great working with the Prince and the other panelists. Although I’m typically reserved and often feel anxious, this experience truly made me feel like I was reconnecting with old friends I hadn’t seen in ages. This made it much easier for me to be able to share my own life experiences on such a big platform.”
Although fishing was not part of the discussion, Riddell told Angling International: “I know myself that fishing has been a huge part of my recovery. I fell out of love with the sport and it was something I discussed during my treatment at James’ Place. As a result I picked up a rod again and noticed the benefits straight away.
“My mind became ‘quieter’ while I was fishing and it gave me the space to be able to switch off from the rest of the world. It was an opportunity to dedicate all my focus on doing something I truly love.”
Angling Direct Marketing Manager Oliver Harper said: “We are incredibly proud of Nathan’s achievement, and we support his passion on this topic as mental health is such a part of our wellbeing.”
