International angler explains his passion for new footwear brand

Share

Sandro Onofaro is Strategic Consultant for Strike Footwear which is the official footwear partner of the International Game Fish Association. Here he explains how the brand aligns with his passion for success on the water and for the future of the marine environment.

How did your passion for fishing begin?
SO: I’ve spent two months every year at the seaside in Greece since I was born, cruising on ribs or boats. I got my first fishing rod at four, inspired by my father who loved spearfishing – I wanted to be just like him. By age nine, I told my parents I wanted to become a professional fisherman – and so it happened. My path was clear from the start.

What do you enjoy most about being on the water today?
Over time, my experience has deepened my respect for the sea. I’m much more aware of how I fish than I was in the past. This learning is continuous and allows me to understand the most important actions at every stage of the fishing trip – when to catch and release, and how to minimise environmental impact. All this allows me to enjoy my day at sea more, to experience these moments of fishing more deeply, and above all, the nature that surrounds me during my travels.

How do you prepare for a day of fishing – mentally and practically?
Preparation is key for success. The night before, I visualise the trip – from gear and strategy to weather and safety. I always plan A, B, and even C. But once on the water, flexibility is essential. This balance between planning and adaptability helps me stay focused and calm.

What have you been working on lately?
I’ve recently been working on a project with a friend and longtime fishing partner: the development of a product I believe will benefit the entire fishing community and protect marine environments. A line of shoes designed by us fishermen for fishermen. Strike – by anglers, for anglers. They guarantee grip and stability in any fishing scenario, providing comfort and safety for the foot. Furthermore, to contribute to the future of the oceans, they are made with sustainable and recycled materials, and the wear of the soles does not release microplastics into the environment, but only beneficial nutrients. A portion of the proceeds from each pair of shoes sold is donated to the world’s largest sportfishing association, the IGFA, to support their programs to protect marine species and the oceans and ensure a fishing future for new generations.

When it comes to gear, what really makes a difference out on the water?
Confidence – in your team, your gear, your environment. And confidence in your footing, which is why I believe in Strike. Feeling stable means faster, safer retrievals.

Where can we expect to see you next — on the water or at another event?
I’ll be in England for a fishing competition in early September, then Sicily for a Mediterranean Spearfish research mission. After that, Rimini, then Oman for a major final, and finally at global boat shows – starting with Fort Lauderdale in October.
