A Japanese fishing line manufacturer has made returning to the frontier of the fishing tackle business in Europe a priority in 2025.
Momoi Fishing, a regular award-winner at European trade shows since its debut in 2007, was one of the best known international visitors before making its last appearance in Brussels in 2019, before COVID struck. “We were at the frontier of Europe,” Ken Harada, General Manager of the company, told Angling International. “Since the pandemic we could not return to that position, although we have kept in touch with some customers online.

“The target for 2025 is to return to the frontier of the fishing tackle business in the region. We have developed the highest quality fishing line in recent years and are ready to return.”
Business for Momoi in recent years has been difficult. Harada explained: “In 2023 our sales to Europe were bad – similar to 2022 – because of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. However, the business situation recovered little by little in 2024 and order volumes have increased.
“We believe this trend will continue and hope to see it get back to pre-COVID levels.”
Harada (pictured) added that a major breakthrough for Momoi last year was its return to the Fishing Show Osaka – Japan’s biggest event of its kind. “It did not mean that we shifted our target back to our domestic market, but saw us target international visitors. The Japanese yen is very weak these days so many visitors came to our country for both a holiday and business.
“We were able to meet international and domestic visitors.”
Momoi boasts a high quality line-up of monofilaments for its customers, but Harada picked out the Cast Mania Mono as its 2024 bestseller. “This new item was an idea born from a European customer who needed a monofilament that had high castability and visibility. We developed a line that is soft, has a hard core and a smooth coating to improve casting distance. As for colour, we opted by a highly visible orange and green.”
