UK shot makers call for ban on use of lead

UK tackle manufacturer Dinsmores has called for any forthcoming restrictions on lead in angling to go beyond a sales ban, warning that retailers could be disadvantaged if fishermen are still permitted to use it.

Speaking to Angling International at EFTTEX, the company, which has been making lead-free terminal tackle since a ban was introduced in the UK in the 1980s, said it understands that a ban on the sale of lead products is approaching, but believes regulators should also consider prohibiting its use as well.

A ban on the use of lead by anglers across the EU was in the original restrictions considered by the EU but reversed at the last minute following representations from a number of EU member states.

Nigel May, Managing Director of the company (above left with brother Ian), added that a sales-only ban could create a loophole that allows anglers to continue purchasing lead products directly from overseas online sellers, undermining compliant tackle retailers.

“Without a ban on use, genuine retailers will lose out to illegal online sales,” he said.

Away from the lead debate, Dinsmores reported a successful EFTTEX, using the show to strengthen relationships with existing customers and pursue new business opportunities. May said he met several potential wholesale partners in markets where it currently lacks representation, including Spain.

May added he was satisfied with visitor numbers, noting that his priority is meeting major wholesalers, distributors and fellow exhibitors rather than attracting large numbers of independent retailers.

He has already confirmed his attendance at next year’s EFTTEX in Prague, describing the exhibition as ‘vital’ for smaller manufacturers and brands and an essential shop window into the wider European market.

He added that he would not advise any significant changes to the current EFTTEX format, describing the event as ‘perfect for us as it is’.

In recent years Dinsmores has become a regular winner at the European tackle awards and was once again recognised in Barcelona with a runners-up accolade for its non-toxic Stealth Egg Shot.
