Academy opened seven stores in November with more to come

Share

One of the leading suppliers of fishing tackle in the US opened seven new stores during November and plans to continue its ambitious expansion plans by opening up to another 140 by the end of 2027.

Academy Sports + Outdoors marked the openings in Texas, Florida, Virginia and Illinois by donating more than $40,000 to local community organisations at each location.

“Academy Sports + Outdoors is excited to provide even more customers with a localised assortment that meets the needs of active families in these new communities,” said Sam Johnson, President of the group. “With the growth of these new stores and academy.com, Academy is able to help more customers have fun out there and be the destination for low prices and gifts that create lasting memories for families.

“Every Academy store is a fun destination where families can find outdoor gear for all sports, including fishing, from top national brands at everyday value. Fishing licences are also available for purchase in store.”

As it revealed its expansion plans for the future, Academy reported a net sales decline of 6.4% for the third quarter of its financial year. CEO Steve Lawrence told investors its sales and net earnings came below expectations, primarily driven by ‘weakening consumer sentiment’ coupled with above normal temperatures that negatively affected demand for Fall product.

Founded in Texas in 1938, Academy has grown to 282 stores across 18 states.
