The Popping Frog is set to make eyes bulge at next week’s ICAST. And the new bait from Gambler Lures, which  has been the subject of rumour for a while, starts shipping to retailers after the big show.

Gambler Lures, a Florida company associated with developing lures for fishing over grass and heavy cover, has been working on the Popping Frog for more than a year.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said owner, Val Osinski. “We wanted to make it perfect. We worked with Kail Stevens, who dominates Lake Okeechobee on top water. He helped us achieve the perfect pop and get the bait to sit a little bit deeper in thick grass.

The frog comes pre-weighted with an in-built rattle.In addition to standard colours, it is also available in customised finishes for different water clarities, developed with the help of local tournament anglers.

Osinski says the prototype has already gained tournament credibility in recent months with multiple bags over 30lb from Okeechobee, including a 36lb catch by Scenko STIX owner Alex Tereschenko.
