Dick’s plans to open biggest ever store

Share

The biggest store ever built by Dick’s Sporting Goods is being planned for Johnson City, New York in 2023.

The giant US retail chain numbers more than 800 stores in 47 states, but nothing will compare to the two-level, 140,000 square feet Dick’s House of Sport being built on the site of the former Macy’s store in the Oakdale Mall.

The project will see Dick’s return to its roots. Dick Stack, father of current Executive Chairman Ed Stack, opened Dick’s Bait and Tackle in Binghampton in 1948. The shop soon grew into a sporting goods store and a second location was opened before Stack and his siblings bought their father’s business in 1984.

And in 2018, a 630,000 square-foot distribution centre was opened within the Conklin Corporate Park, New York.

“We are so excited to bring it [the business] back to Binghampton, to our hometown, with the largest store we have ever built,” said Stack.

Dick’s is thought to have around 10% of the US fishing retail market. The Binghampton store, the fourth Dick’s House of Sport, will also feature a climbing wall, batting cage, and a 17,000 square-foot turf field with a track that will double as an ice rink in the winter.

“Who would have thought a little fishing tackle shop on the East Side would turn into this,” said Broome County Executive Jason Garner. “This will be more than a store. It’s going to be a destination for people from far beyond this community.”
