Shimano takes wraps off wide ranging mid-price Nasci rods and reels

Any new launch by Shimano is going to grab the attention of dealers and media. So little wonder the brand’s booth at the ICAST trade show was a hive of activity when the wraps were taken off its Nasci reels and rods for the first time.

The range includes a series of well-priced reels featuring some of Shimano’s best technology, a comprehensive selection of predator rods with choices for all modern fishing styles and a matching combo. Designed in response to both the rise in angling participation and the increase in the popularity of lure fishing, the launch looks to be perfectly timed to capitalise on these trends with recognisable, branded products at justifiable prices.

Here’s what Shimano says about the NASCI range:

“Offering exceptional value at prices around €100 and a wide range of model choices, NASCI products give anglers the opportunity to buy individually or as a balanced rod/reel combination to suit their choice of set-up. The front drag reel range embraces modern design and visual trends, with Shimano’s unrivalled engineering excellence. The understated, almost monochromic grey body fits perfectly alongside Shimano’s latest reels, making the range a compelling proposition for anglers looking for a mid-priced reel.

“In use, the unmistakable smoothness of the HAGANE gear and the reassuring torque and solidity of X-SHIP is immediately apparent. The reel rotates with a whisper-quiet hum and a directness that belies its price. Even experienced anglers would struggle to rate the new NASCI as anything other than a higher-end reel.”

Nasci comes in a full range of sizes. The smallest 500 is perfectly suited for the lightweight ‘street’ fishing – very much in vogue with modern younger anglers – while the powerhouse 5000 will cope with the largest lures, the largest waters and the largest fish. The mid-sized models present the option of shallow spools – great for braid – and high gear models for ultra-fast retrieves. There is something in the range for every angler, says Shimano.

“The NASCI Spinning rod range takes inspiration from the NASCI reel, combining understated elegance with functionality. The satin grey carbon blanks are lightweight and responsive in feel and action, with the hidden strength Biofibre, and the additional power of Diaflash carbon wrapping on the butt section. This gives the rods a firmer low-end feel, often associated with ultra-high modulus carbon models. The custom designed reel seats are miniature works of art, combining engineered metal, carbon and composite to produce a slim and secure connection.

“NASCI rods fish every bit as good as they look and are available in two different actions. The medium/fast action (cork handle) will suit more traditional lure anglers and those who usually fish crank-type baits using a constant or stop/start retrieve. The fast action (EVA split grip handle), has a more contemporary look and the action is better suited to modern methods using plastic shads and lift and jerk retrieves, or dropshot methods where the fast action puts more life into the lure.”
